Live Updates: Bayelsa Elections result (Nov. 2019)

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Sunday (Nov 17, 2019) commenced the collation and announcement of the elections in Bayelsa.

Collation of results will started with Sagbama LGA, where Seriake Dickson, incumbent governor of the state, comes from.

The last governorship election in Bayelsa didn’t end on first ballot and there were killings but this year has been different.

Faraday Orumwese, the returning officer, declares David Lyon, candidate of the APC winner of the election. 

“That David Lyon of the APC having satisfied the requirement of the law is hereby declared winner and returned elected.”

Orunwese reads out the figures: 

Total registered voters- 922, 562

Accredited voters- 517, 883

APC- 352, 552 

PDP- 143, 172

Valid votes- 499, 551 

Rejected votes- 6, 333

Total Votes cast- 505, 884

Faraday Orumwese, vice-chancellor University of Benin and the returning officer for the governorship poll, is set to take the final reading of the results.

The candidate of the APC has secured the highest number of votes in the election, leading his PDP rival with a margin of 209,382 votes.

This is the first time since 1999 that an opposition party will achieve such feat.

David Lyon of the All Progressive Congress (APC) secured more votes than Duoye Diri of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

So far, here are the summation of scores announced for six out of the eight LGAs in Bayelsa.

APC – 206,260

Governorship election result for Ogbia LGA 

APC – 58,016 

PDP – 13,763

The returning officer for Yenagoa LGA says there was cancellation of results in some units owing to violence.

The returning officer for Brass LGA says results from ward 10 were cancelled, and that this affected 13 polling units with 7596 registered voters. He gives over-voting as the reason for this. 

Result from unit 8 in ward 1 was also cancelled. There are 427 registered voters here. The returning officer says the result was tampered with. 

Two units were also cancelled in ward 9, where there are 623 registered voters. Violence is given as the reason for the cancellation.

Votes cast -34,849

APC – 23, 831 

PDP – 10, 410

Brass LGA is next. Timipre Sylva, a former governor of Bayelsa and current minister of state for petroleum, is from the LGA.

The returning officer for Kolokuma/Opokuma LGA says result from only one unit was cancelled. She gives over-voting as the reason for this. Registered voters in the unit are 446.

An agent of Accord party says his party rejects the result from Kolokuma. 

“Our candidate is from this LGA and how do you expect him to score only 68 votes? Doesn’t he have family members and friends? REC, please cancel this result,” he said,

The agent’s remark throws the room into laughter.

APC – 83,041

PDP – 874

The Sagbama LGA returning officer says “results from 17 polling units were cancelled in the LGA”. 

He gives over-voting and card reader malfunctioning as the reason for this.

Although Monday Udoh, the state’s resident electoral commissioner (REC), had told reporters over the phone that the collation exercise will start by 11am, there is no electoral official yet at the collation centre.
