Use Of Fake Phone Numbers By Ogun State Ministry Of Health On Its Portal

The emergence of coronavirus in Nigeria has thrown the nation into a frenzy similitude to the last experienced in 2014.

No touching, no shaking, and fear of sitting close to people coughing and/or sneezing (especially in mass transit) is now the self-precaution practiced by Nigerians.

There is a news that has been circulating in Nigeria of a purported victim of coronavirus in Ogun State who threatened to circulate the new virus all over the country.

The victim was alleged to be the driver of the index case victim of the virus. According to the circulating news, the “man drove the white man [Italian, first confirmed patient of coronavirus in Nigeria] to Ogun State, and runs away after being diagnosed with the virus”.

To confirm the authenticity of the news, Lanre News tried to contact the Ogun State Ministry of Health but what we discovered was heartbreaking.

The phone numbers provided by the Ogun State’s ministry of health on its portal were FAKE.

The phone number designated as that of their Political Head, Alhaji Bashiru Fadairo (08037175187) does not belong to an employee of the agency.

Lanre News conversation with the original owner of the phone number:

Lanre News: Hello, good afternoon Sir. We are calling you from Lanre News

Responder: Ok.

Lanre News: Please, is that Alhaji Bashiru Fadairo.

Responder: Go on.

Lanre News: We got your contact from Ogun State’s Ministry of Health portal and will like to confirm the authenticity of news.

Responder: I don’t have any deal or connection with Ogun State’s Ministry of Health. People keep disturbing me from different media houses. I am not one of their employees.

Responder: Please, contact their commissioner for health to ask whatever you want to ask.

Considered a mistake, we tried to contact other phone numbers on the website. The network provider response was that the number (08172027776) is not assigned to a customer.

Another number 08172027775 constantly return a response of “not reachable.”

The news on the driver infected with coronavirus in Ogun State, circulating across the social media, according to The Sun report has been debunked by the Chief Press Secretary to the state’s Governor, Dapo Abiodun, Kunle Somorin.
