Who is Mansa Musa?

Mansa, in the native language of Mandinka which is associated with the Keita Dynasty of the Mali Empire, means Emperor or Sultan.

Mansa Musa who began his reign as the Mansa between the years 1312 and 1337, was born in the year 1280 to his father, Faga Leye, and mother, Kanku.

By 1324, after his reign began, Musa had already captured 24 cities and their region before he proceeded on a hajj to Mecca. He took an entourage and camels with him alongside enormous bars of gold placed on the entourage and the camels.

How did Mansa Musa become so rich?

Quite sure you would have imagined how he got so rich in the 14th century and still regarded as richer than the tech billionaires of the present.

As of the time he began his reign as king, the Mali empire enjoyed riches. However, during his reign, the empire flourished more in riches and Musa took advantage of the gold and salt of the country which accounted for almost half of the world’s trade at that time.

Although several historians described his wealth as indescribable and innumerable, his estimated net worth was valued at the equivalent of about $400 billion.

What did Mansa Musa use most of his wealth for?

Asides from giving out gold to the poor as he progressed on his pilgrimage to Mecca, he also built mosques every Friday.

History also pointed out that he built and commissioned several buildings for universities and schools throughout the kingdom.
