The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has disclosed that no fewer than 161 persons lost their lives in road accidents across Ogun State within five months, since the start of the year.

The State Command’s spokesperson, Mr Afolabi Odunsi, disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday in Ota.

Odunsi noted that 415 road crashes were recorded across Ogun State between January and May, while 1,007 persons sustained various degrees of injuries from the crashes.

He also stated there was a slight decrease in the number of road accidents in the state when compared to the same period in 2025, which recorded 494 road traffic crashes; hence, a decrease of 79.

He further said that the number of deaths recorded in 2026 declined to 161 from the 212 recorded in 2025.

According to him, the number of people injured also decreased from 1,121 recorded in 2025 to 1,007 in 2026.

”This feat couldn’t have been achieved if not for the intensive public enlightenment by the FRSC personnel educating the public on road safety measures.’’

Odunsi, however, attributed most of the road crashes to violation of traffic rules and regulations, including speeding, drunk driving, wrong overtaking, use of phone, overloading, tyre bursts, among others.

“We are appealing to the motorists to adhere strictly to traffic rules and regulations in order to prevent unnecessary loss of lives through road crashes,” he said
